The 2022 Dodge Challenger is an explosion of the past, not only because the vibe of it all is old school, but some of the models are very exciting. An inexpensive way to join the Challenger muscle brotherhood is using a V-6 entry-level model-only two-door muscle car that offers all-wheel drive. The Challenger is bigger and less sporty than the Chevy Camaro or Ford Mustang. However, it rides easily and offers comfortable passenger accommodation. And although intermediate interiors and unsatisfactory hand transmission have damaged the 2022 Challenger, it is still a cool coupe that always reminds its driver of the past.
The back-drive, the V-6-powered Challenger, is estimated to gain 19 mpg on city and 30 highways. Adding an all-wheel drive to the mix reduces those ratings by 1 and 3 mpg. Competitors with a 5.7-liter V-8 are expected to benefit from 16 mpg city and 25 highway. The 6.4-liter V-8 versions are limited to 15 mpg city and 24 highways. We tested the all-wheel-drive V-6 Challenger and another 485-hp V-8 and automatic transmission on our real-world 75-mph route, which is part of our extensive testing program. The Challenger has a classic muscle car interior, with a simple design inspired by its predecessors of the 1970s and comfortable seating. The Dodge is farther inside than its horsepower rivals, and adults can use the back seat. Unfortunately, its rubber material is similar to older vinyl than premium plastic, and its background looks lousy. The wide front seats of the Challenger are comfortable to move, but even the seats you choose, which add to the tightness, do not cover their passengers the way those in the Camaro or Mustang do. The Dodge car pony has more than seven cubic ft of cargo space in its trunk compared to the Camaro. This allows the Challenger to swallow two luggage bags than the Camaro. Fold the back seats down, and that benefit grows to six. The Challenger has a large console bar in the smartphone’s useful area. However, none of the vehicles we tested in this class were particularly capable of storing small items.

The base of the Challenger’s 305-hp V-6 will not satisfy those looking for fun. The modest engine only combines with the automatic, but the heavy Challenger lacks the speed and excitement of rivals. Dodge’s Hemi V-8 engines are another story. The 375-hp 5.7-liter we tested had a lot of juice, so it could roll where needed, and its belly roar was delightful. Those looking to increase the Challenger’s power will want the 6.4-liter V-8, which produces 485 power and 475 pounds of torque.
